San Francisco 49ers 38
Arizona Cardinals 13
Sunday / January 8, 2023

San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle's (85) two touchdown catches give him a team-high 11 touchdowns this season.
San Francisco 49ers Pound
Arizona Cardinals
After a day-long power-outage, I headed out for batteries and some vittles so I could be back in time to listen to the game on radio, if necessary, or watch, if possible.
By the time I got out of the parking lot, Arizona and QB David Blough had scored on a trick, 75-yard pass-play TD to A.J. Green, and then missed the point-after. On my way home, the 49ers began to roar back, behind a run by Harvard Alum Juszczyk, #44 and a TD run by Christian McCaffery (CMC), to take a 7-6 lead, as the power was restored to my part of Monterey as I pulled into the driveway.
The Niners kicked off and Samson Ebukan leveled Blough and forced an Arizona punt. After a typically fearless return by the versatile and dynamic Ray-Ray McCloud III, Purdy was sacked by J.J. Watt, in his final NFL game, and the Niners were forced to punt. Armstead would then help stuff an AZ 4th and one attempt. The quarter ended at 7-6, SF.
After exchanges, Tashaun Gipson Sr. intercepted Blough after SF had punted to the AZ 12, and it was time for a "Welcome Back Elijah Mitchell" cheer as he powered over three defenders and into the end zone. 14-6 SF. AZ came back despite some run-stuffs by #96, T.Y. McGill, and Corey Clement ran for a TD to make it 14-13, SF.
Some mild stress could be felt by fans. Another excellent return by Ray-Ray, a pass to Brandon Aiyuk (who went over 1,000 yards for the season on the day), passes to Deebo and CMC and a Brock Purdy pass to George Kittle, who nimbly tip-toed through the end zone for a TD, made it 21-13 SF at halftime.
The Cardinals kicked off and Watt had another sack, but CMC and Elijah Mitchell had key runs with Mitchell boosting the Niners' lead to 28-13, and the crowd collectively began to exhale. Yet another interception by Tashaun Gipson Sr. and some Gore-like runs by Mason led to a FG by Robbie Gould: 31-13, SF, at 5:47 of the 3rd Q.
A sack by #75, Jordan "THIS is what I'm talkin' about" Willis, caused a fumble which would lead to another Purdy to Kittle TD, to make the score 38-13, SF. (Quick note: Purdy could use that collective push technique from rugby players referenced in a Letter to the Editor a few weeks ago, as he went nowhere when he tried to score from the One.)
McSorley replaced Blough at QB, but it was to be all Niner D-FENCE for the balance of the contest, as a Mitch Wishnowsky punt settled on the AZ 3-yard line at 5:20 of the 4th Q.
Final score: San Francisco 49ers 38, Arizona Cardinals 13.
Next up: San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks, Saturday, January 14, 1:30 p.m.

Letters to the Editor
A Gritty Team Fit for a Gritty City
I'm not sure there has ever been a team more representative of its community than this year's vintage of the Buffalo Bills. The gritty city who has survived a tragic year, with a racially-motivated mass shooting in a supermarket, and a series of fatal winter storms, loyally roots for an equally gritty team hoping to cap off a very challenging season with a fairytale championship run.
First, dealing with the sudden death of tight end Dawson Knox's younger brother (FIU linebacker Luke Knox), and last week's near tragedy of safety Damar Hamlin's on-field cardiac arrest. The outpouring of support for the city, the team, and Damar Hamlin's charity has been a welcome reminder of the genuine goodness in people. Perhaps this is the year that this gritty team fit for this gritty community delivers this championship-starved city a Super Bowl.

Very Cool
I subscribed. My main team is the White Sox. I'm still living off the glory that was 2005!
I had great seats this past summer when Dylan Cease went 8 2/3 innings before giving up a hit. Would have been nice, but that's baseball.

To help me better understand how millions of Americans spent hours of precious time over the last few weeks watching College Football Bowls from coast-to-coast and in Bermuda, I put this complicated grid of connectivity on my whiteboard connected by yards of thread.

Giants agree to two-year contract with
outfielder Michael Conforto
The Giants and outfielder Michael Conforto agreed to terms on a two-year Major League contract worth $36 million, which includes an opt-out following the 2023 season if Conforto accumulates a total of 350 plate appearances. Conforto will make $18 million in both 2023 and 2024. Conforto will donate $90,000 to the Giants Community Fund in both 2023 and 2024.
Conforto, 29, last played in 2021 for the Mets where he hit .232 with 14 home runs, 55 RBI, 20 doubles and a .729 OPS in 125 games. The Seattle, WA native earned All-MLB 2nd Team honors in his 2020 campaign with New York, slashing .322/.412/.515 with 12 doubles and nine homers in 54 games. Conforto did not play during the 2022 season, recovering from right shoulder surgery that was done in April.
Conforto was an All-Star in 2017 and from 2017-2020 he put together a .265/.369/.495 slash line with 86 doubles, 97 homers, 273 RBI and an .864 OPS. Conforto’s 97 homers as an outfielder in that span were eighth-most in the Majors behind Mike Trout (131), Bryce Harper (108), Aaron Judge (107), Christian Yelich (107), Charlie Blackmon (102), Mookie Betts (99) and George Springer (99). His .369 OBP and .868 OPS as an OF were both 10th-best among Major League outfielders in that time.

Stanford Continuing Studies
Winter Quarter 2023 -- BUS 119
Title: Make Sense of the Madness:
The Evolving Business of College Athletics
Instructor -- Andy Dolich
The business of college athletics is booming. Close to 2,000 athletic departments throughout the U.S. generate $25.5 billion in media rights while attracting over 190 million enthusiastic, ticket-buying fans. This industry is evolving real-time in increasingly complex ways. The recent news that USC and UCLA are leaving the Pac-12 for the Big Ten Conference has created waves of uncertainty and speculation about the future. Just a year ago, college athletes were first permitted to profit from the rights for their Name, Image, or Likeness (NIL) while on the playing fields of their schools. What do these seismic changes mean for college athletes, administrators, and fans now and
in the future?
This course examines the business of college sports past,
present and future.
Session One -- Introduction on the Business of College Sports
Session Two -- Overview of the changes in the Pac-12 and beyond -- Ted Robinson
Session Three -- Economics -- Dr. Dan Rascher
Session Four -- The Media -- Jon Wilner
Session Five -- Athletes and coaches - Ben Braun
Session Six -- Final Round -- Table with representatives of involved
constituencies.
Sessions will include interactive discussions from industry experts.
Students will leave this course with insights into the revolutionary changes affecting the business of college sports.

Tampa Bay is the sixth NFL team to enter the playoffs with a losing record. The NFC Bucs have an 8-9 record.
SO, six teams have now made the NFL playoffs with losing records, two with 4-5 records in the strike-shortened 1982 season.
Name one of the two teams out of the first five that won a game in the playoffs. If you know both,

Former Giants GM Brian Sabean takes on a new advisory role
with the New York Yankees
| |
|
Brian Sabean, Giants architect of three World Series titles, now with the Yankees
by Amaury Pi-Gonzalez
| |
SAN FRANCISCO –The main brain trust that brought the first World Series title to the Giants, and a total of three World Series titles in 2010, 2012 and 2014, has rejoined his original team, the New York Yankees. Sabean is now an executive advisor to senior vice president to the general manager of the Yankees, Brian Cashman.
Sabean is the man who was credited with shaping the New York Yankees during their dynasty of the late 1990s. “Saves” (one of his nicknames) was with the Giants for the past 30 years and served as senior vice president and general manager from 1996 until 2015. He scouted well in New York and also in San Francisco. Brian Sabean is one of the most accomplished baseball executives in recent history.
Giants fans might remember some of these names who came to San Francisco under Brian Sabean's reign, many via trades: J.T. Snow, Jeff Kent, Benito Santiago, Juan Uribe, Edgar Rentería, Ellis Burks, Pat Burell, Kenny Lofton, Robb Nen and others.
About returning to work for the Yankees he said: “It’s humbling. At my age, I really appreciate being wanted and needed,” Sabean said. “As I talked to Cash, I think it became organic as to how I could help the organization. I’m all in. I’ll do anything to help the Yankees win another World Series. Our family is thrilled, and we’re totally invested.”
At 66 years of age Sabean looks to another chapter of his life. Prior to ascending to general manager of the Giants, he was head of their baseball division from 1977 to 2018. He brought to the Giants all the success they never had (as far as winning) since the team moved to San Francisco in 1958.
Although he will never have a statue at Oracle Park, Brian Sabean is the only general manager in San Francisco Giants' history with three World Series rings.

Don't worry about the Warriors
/ The Kids are Alright
by Howard Pearlstein
…doesn’t mean they’ll win every game, although the Piston’s last second 3-pointer is an ironic mirror of the Dubs’ recent finish against the Hawks. Gotta love the magic even tho it hurts to see it from the other team’s side.
BUT – even without Steph or Wiggs or Kuminga or JaMychal or a good umbrella, what we’ve been waiting and hoping for is here – smoothly-co-ordinated play of new and two-way and bench players integrated into playing with veterans and each other worked well – very well.
Klay and Poole did well, of course, carried the load as usual, but Ty Jerome had 18, Anthony Lamb had 17, PBJ and Moody and the rest playing up to the levels the team had hoped for – offense and defense -- and getting from behind to the tie (with 0.1 left).
And of course, Mr Mojo made an appearance.
“Hey kids,” he said, “Sorry, but this one is for the Pistons. I’m traveling with El Senor and he’s my ride – he drives a Ford and you know -- Detroit Iron. But I still love you guys, love the Bay Area -- great weather even when it rains too much -- or did you think Kevon tipping in the winning shot against the Hawks was business as usual? You’re still the most fun in any game played in short pants.”
And he showed it with a blocked shot flying, hitting other hands and then bouncing into the hands of a Dubs player who was standing at the 3-point curve and who reacted immediately for a score. (Or did I fall asleep and dream that? Edit the game in my eyes-closed half-asleep dream-mind while hearing Fitz and Bueke on TV? Was it in another game? Brain jellied from too much tv during the sequester?)
I’m not worried about Oldtimers’ Disease – those who know me know I was just as spaced out when I was 16 and in high school. And those were the 50s, before I knew anything about things like weed. Had no idea what the hell Philly Police Chief Frank Rizzo was talking about when he raided the Gilded Cage Coffee House where classical music played while we were drinking coffee and pretending to be intellectual bohemians when we were just trying to meet/pick up the girls who were also pretending. Ah well.
And Mr. Mojo seems to be working specifically for newbies – rookies and new hires for both the Dubs and the 9ers – creating opportunities to give new guys a chance to shine. Hufanga on Willis’ blocked punt for a Kick Six last year. Brock Purdy and Mason and Davis-Price for the 9ers this year.
And the Dubs’ two-way guys no longer a problem for their play – they came through as needed – only problem now is NBA rules and the $$ to keep them when the 50-days are up. And all the other Dubs newbies passing their bumper-car game on their way into the Warriors’ poetry in motion game.
And when Steph and Wiggs can return (and hopeful that Iguodala can come back), Dubs will have enough time to get the timing down and polish up the game to shine in the playoffs.
It all looks good. When a game played by mostly backups only loses by a shot at 0.01, it’s just whatever – the weather, astrology, global warming – they’re not “backups” anymore – they’re Dubs, and those kids are alright.

Mike Tyson -- from the Autograph Collection of Rich Yee
The annual dental convention in Anaheim that I’ve been going to has been a great place to get athlete autographs. There’s a vendor there who always hires athletes to sign autographs for customers who purchase their products. One year they had Mike Tyson. After making the required purchase the vendor gave me a boxing glove and I got in line to meet Mike Tyson. Even though he was sitting when I approached his table he looked massive. Next I found myself staring at his face tattoo as I chatted with him for a moment while he signed my glove. I shook his hand and thanked him. He was very polite and I was happy for the chance to meet this boxing legend.

Oakland Roots will get the chance for revenge against the team who knocked them out of the 2022 playoffs.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Brady could be the first to win the Super Bowl with a losing team. If anyone could do it, it is Tom Brady.
A Tampa Bay victory would make the club the losingest team to win a Super Bowl and would replace
Eli Manning's 9-7 record for the worst win/loss
record to win a Super Bowl.
1982 – The Cleveland Browns (4-5, lost their first playoff game against the Raiders)
1982 – The Detroit Lions (4-5, lost their first playoff game against Washington)
2010 – The Seattle Seahawks (7-9, won their first playoff game against New Orleans)
2014 – The Carolina Panthers (7-8-1, won their first playoff game against Arizona)
2020 – The Washington Football Team (7-9, lost their first playoff game to the Buccaneers)
2022 - The Tampa Bay Bucs (8-9... Any given Sunday going Brady's way could...)
https://bit.ly/3Czej7X will take you to the stories...
Go Tom Brady!

Author Leonie Samuel-Hool recounts stories of a vanished society and legends of the gods and goddesses that protect and sometimes make mischief in Indonesian homes, fields and foods. The recipes are explicitly presented.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and 4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
